UNIFY THE SPACE WITH FLOORING Use the same flooring throughout in your open-plan space, this will allow you to easily combine the entire room. Opt for a hardwearing, low-maintenance and easy-to-keep clean flooring such as wood-effect laminate, vinyl or tiles.
CREATE ZONES WITH FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES Most open-plan living areas consist of a kitchen and dining zone, a study area, reading nook and living area. Use pieces of furniture to define each of these areas, for example, a corner sofa can be used to zone off the living space and make it feel a little more intimate, an island unit in the kitchen can act as a visual divider between the working area of the kitchen and the dining zone. You can also use free-standing shelving to divide the space which often also gives you much needed storage. Rugs are another must-have to define zones within open-plan layouts, they not only divide the areas, they also help you to group furniture around it easier, absorb noise therefore making it a cosier environment.
SET THE MOOD WITH LIGHTING It's important to use different lighting for each of the zones as this will allow you create the appropriate mood and also help with dividing the areas. For example, a pendant light over the table will define the dining area, table lamps and floor lamps create a warmer, more cosier feel for the lounge area while brighter spotlights in the kitchen are great for preparing food.
